Spinal decompression is a non-surgical therapy for people who suffer from chronic neck and back pain caused by spinal degeneration, bulging and herniated intervertebral discs, arthritis and other spine related conditions.

Intervertebral discs are a fluid filled structure that require movement to create a pumping action, called imbibition. Imbibition draws essential fluids and nutrients into the discs to maintain hydration and healthy function of the discs and spinal joints. As a result of aging, injury, asymmetrical spinal loading, poor posture, and many other factors, the spinal joints become stiff and lose vital spinal segmental motion. This loss of motion leads to reduced imbibition, and dehydration (desiccation) of the intervertebral discs results. When a spinal disc is dehydrated, it loses its height, flexibility, and ability to absorb load and shock, which is a primary cause of degenerative disc and joint disease. A spinal decompression treatment gently stretches and decompresses the spinal structures through repetitive pull and release movements of the spinal decompression table. The table slowly oscillates the spine, creating a gentle pumping motion which creates a negative pressure within the intervertebral discs. The negative pressure allows a disc bulge or herniation to be reduced and the vital fluids, nutrients and oxygen to be drawn into the disc to rehydrate the disc and help stimulate repair and healing. Rehydration of the discs and surrounding structures creates a positive physiological change which decreases pain levels and assists the body’s natural healing process and healthy functioning of the spine. Research shows that long term effects and continued improvement are seen following a spinal decompression program. This non-invasive approach is often used to treat conditions that result in persistent neck pain, low back pain and nerve related symptoms, without the need for surgery.

Common conditions treated with spinal decompression include:

  • Chronic low back and neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Disc bulges and disc herniations
  • Degenerative disc and joint disease
  • Spondylosis (spine osteoarthritis)
  • Facet joint syndrome
  • Failed back surgery syndrome
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Chronic muscle tension
